Ten of Elvis's Most Iconic Outfits, Ranked by Me

Do I have any qualifications as a fashion critic? Absolutely not!

Despite the name "Beyond the Jumpsuit", this article will feature a lot of jumpsuits, because come on, it's Elvis. I went to Google and looked up the ten most famous Elvis looks and I've ranked them below.

  1. The gold suit

I'm sure this is a controversial pick for my least favorite Elvis look, but I stand by it. It's just....SO much gold. It's hard to look directly at it. I want to, because it's Elvis, but under the stage lights, it can be blinding. This is also one of my least favorite outfits to see on ETAs. It can either look really good or like a gold plated garbage bag. Unfortunately, a lot of them I've seen have the garbage bag look. I will say that just the jacket with black pants makes this outfit look soooo much better in my book. Before you come for me, know that the king himself wasn't a fan! When Bill Belew wanted to recreate the suit for the '68 comeback special, Elvis said "I always hated that suit and I won't wear it."

  1. The Speedway Jacket

I do love this outfit, but compared to the other notable looks, it's a bit plain. But I still prefer the red jacket over the gold trashbag. Featured in the 1968 film "Speedway", the jacket seems to come most often in red, but I've also seen blue and black.

  1. Blue Hawaii

Fun fact about this look: Elvis never wears this shirt in the movie. It was used for the promotional photos, but he wears a different red hawaiin shirt as his character Chad Gates. For some reason, he wears a much wilder shirt that's a bit of an eyesore, honestly. I feel like the promotional shirt is less distracting. It comes in at number eight for me because it's a good look, if a bit plain. Again, this look is for a movie so plain was the goal.

You can't tell me this was the better option.

  1. The Hound Dog suit on the Steve Allen Show

Honestly, there's not much to say about this one. I personally like this outfit, but it's not Elvis. It's far too stuffy and restricted for him.

  1. The Nixon meeting look

The pictures are a bit misleading because they're in black and white. The description of the look is "a purple velvet suit with a matching cape and a large gold plated belt buckle." Let me tell you, it's a bold choice to meet the President of the United States in a purple velvet suit and a cape. Or really, even just the cape would be a bold choice. But hey, it's Elvis, he wore what he wanted to and it worked for him. This one ranks number 6 on my list just for the words "purple velvet suit and matching cape."

  1. Beads and Fringe

Standing still, I'm not a fan of the fringe. However, this suit is perfect for the famous "Polk Salad Annie" flailing. I am concerned about the beads ON the fringe, because that seems like a great way to get hit in the eye or smack yourself with it.

  1. The royal blue firework suit

I LOVE this suit. I think it's so unique and it's one of my favorite suits to see on an ETA. The vibrant blue is just so eye catching and stands out in a sea of white jumpsuits.

  1. The American eagle suit

This is probably what you think of when you hear "Elvis." Honestly, it's peak Elvis with the white jumpsuit, beads, and MASSIVE BEJEWELED EAGLE. The only reason it ranks in my number three spot is because I see it way too much. It IS one of, if not possibly the most iconic Elvis suit, and for good reason. This look is 150% Elvis.

  1. Jailhouse rock

Ok, I'll admit that I am a bit biased for these last two spots. I tend to like young Elvis a bit more than 70s Elvis, and the jailhouse rock outfit is just so iconic. It's sleek and attractive, and allows for plenty of dancing and flailing. You see this look and immediately know it. It's cemented itself in pop culture and will always be a recognizable icon. On a personal note, the toe point thing freaks me out so much that I can't watch it. My weak ankles would snap like twigs, and after suffering a broken ankle in the past, I can't help but cringe.

  1. The 68 comeback special leather suit

Listen, when I see an ETA come onstage in this outfit, I'm done for. It makes me swoon and if I were a cartoon character, I'd have hearts in my eyes. It's just so PERFECT. It's sleek and sexy, the leather gives Elvis that bad boy/rebel look, and it's absolutely perfect. Except for the sweating, which I imagine there's a lot of.
